Magnetic Particles Testing

Contenu

Magnetic particles testing (MT) is very widespread in the world of welding. It is simple, fast and inexpensive to perform and it makes it easy to detect surface defects (or very shallow ones). This method of inspection applies to any type of metallic or weldable surface, except non-ferromagnetic metals such as aluminum and certain stainless-steel grades.

At Géni-Métal, we offer Magnetic Yolk inspection, a recognized method of passing a current through a coil of wire to create a magnetic field in a bar of soft iron. The field is then transmitted into the workpiece to be inspected and a cloud of magnetic particles (iron powder coated with a color pigment) is applied to the workpiece.

If a discontinuity such as a crack is present in the part, the magnetic field will escape and the magnetic particles will concentrate along the detected discontinuity.

Although inspection by magnetic particles is simple to perform, it should still be done by competent personnel. Some details could be skipped by an inexperienced user and defects could be missed during the inspection. Our inspectors are certified for this type of inspection by CAN/CGSB 48.9712, the organization in Canada that manages non-destructive testing certifications such as MT.
