Coating Inspection

A steel structure is often covered with a coating that protects it against the harmful effects of the environment. Depending on the situation and the requirements of the customer, the steel is generally painted, galvanized or metallized. The world of coating metal parts is very large and it is wrong to think that only the inspection of the finished product is sufficient to ensure the quality of the coating. Several steps should be checked to avoid unpleasant surprises.

The paint is then applied to the surface following the recommendations of the manufacturer. Again, the inspector will have to carry out several checks before the end of the application. For example, ambient temperature, humidity, steel temperature, paint pot life, mixing proportions and much more.

The surface of a piece of steel to be painted must first be cleaned and a surface profile created. This step can be carried out in several ways, but it is generally carried out by sandblasting. Beads of sand or steel are shot onto the surface and create a roughness on which the paint will adhere. During this step, several aspects must be checked, such as the appearance of the surface before and after, the measurement of the surface profile, the time delays between coats and the shot type used. Simple or sophisticated devices assist the inspector in these checks.

Galvanization and metallization are processes by which a piece of steel is covered with zinc; the zinc reacts with the steel to form a protective layer. The cathodic effect of zinc provides excellent protection against corrosion. Galvanization is generally carried out by hot dipping the workpiece in a zinc bath while the metallization refers to the spraying of molten zinc with a flame gun. Both methods are regulated by standards and are subject to several requirements.

Once the paint has dried, the final checks such as thickness measurements, adhesion checks and surface appearance must be completed in accordance with the relevant standards. At Géni-Métal, we carry out several complete painting inspections in various projects. We have the equipments, standards and knowledge to ensure that the requirements are met and that the finished product has the expected lifetime.
