Ultrasonic Testing

Contenu

Ultrasonic testing (UT) has become essential in many projects. It allows the inspector to verify inside the parts by detecting defects not visible from the surface. Its main use is for full-penetration welds, measurements of material thicknesses of all kinds, control of parts such as shafts or pins, etc.

An ultrasonic inspection involves sending very high frequency sound waves into the material. If discontinuities such as porosities, inclusions of slag, lack of fusion, etc. are present in the path of sound wave, the sound is reflected and returns to the ultrasonic flaw detector which converts the returning sound wave into an electronic signal which is interpreted by the flaw detector. By sweeping the entire surface, the inspector can accurately describe the condition of the entire part and compare the significance of the defects with the relevant standards.

Since this method is not very restrictive, it is generally preferred to radiography. Ultrasonic inspection is a completely worker-safe inspection method that is relatively space-saving, relatively fast compared to other processes and where results are instantaneous. It is a very reliable method when carried out by competent personnel. At Géni-Métal, our inspectors are certified for this type of inspection by CAN/CGSB 48.9712, the organization in Canada that manages non-destructive testing certifications such as ultrasonic inspection.
